College football coach believes that Ohio State’s Will Howard is going to have a monster year

Ohio State was active in the transfer portal this off-season and perhaps their biggest get was at the most important position in football.

After Kyle McCord decided to transfer and end up at Syracuse, the Buckeyes brought in Will Howard from Kansas State. McCord struggled to reach the level of play expected at Ohio State, despite having moments of excellence.

Now with the Buckeyes, Howard could be in store for a big season with the weapons that surround him. One anonymous coach from the Big 12 told The Athletic that Howard was going to have a big season in 2024.

“I think he’s gonna have a monster year,” said the coach. “All of a sudden, he’s going to have this great supporting cast around here. For a big guy, he is pretty athletic and can run. I don’t think he has a crazy, strong arm, but he is very accurate and very smart.”

Howard has yet to be named the starter by Ryan Day

Ohio State has an open quarterback job as it currently stands with no one taking the job for certain in the spring. Devin Brown is the other veteran in the group and the Buckeyes welcomed in five-star freshman Julian Sayin and Air Noland. Lincoln Kienholz remains on the roster as well.

Day has said he doesn’t want the job running open still close to the season. The thought is that the Buckeyes will roll with Howard, the graduate transfer who showed glimpses of greatness at Kansas State.

Howard threw 24 touchdowns to 10 interceptions with 351 yards and nine touchdowns on the ground as a senior. The 6-foot-4 quarterback will have a top-flight running back committee of TreVeyon Henderson and Quinshon Judkins at his disposal in the backfield under Chip Kelly’s offense.

Emeka Egbuka is the most experienced wide receiver but a young group of Jeremiah Smith, Carnell Tate, Brandon Inniss, and Bryson Rodgers will have a big impact too. This is a big step up in the overall talent that Howard has around him.

If Howard can have the big season that some in-vision, then it may be what Ohio State needs to be pushed over the top and win the College Football Playoff. A veteran led defense is in place and the pieces on offense are there and in place.
